About Little Bolton

Introduction

Historically, Little Bolton was the part of the town situated to the north of the River Croal, with Great Bolton to the south. It is the only part of the town centre which evolved an identity out of a separate civic administration, conducted from its own town hall until 1839. Much of the development in the area was completed within a few decades, starting with St George?s Church (1796). Unlike other residential areas from the period, Little Bolton was not disturbed by the construction of the railway, and many of the original buildings survive. The Little Bolton Townscape Heritage Initiative covers part of the St George's and Deansgate Conservation Areas which are designated within the town centre.
